Colombian Health Care System

The Colombian health system is highly developed. The emergency health services are of exceptional quality and include specialists from the different fields of medicine.

Sixteen hospital institutions of Colombia are ranked within the 40 best hospitals of Latin America. Our country is also noted for its high quality and low cost dental procedures.

It is important to keep in mind that when traveling within Colombia it is a good idea to obtain medical insurance, either in your country of origin through an insurance provider or travel assistance. Otherwise, it is possible to enroll in a Plan Obligatorio de Salud (a Colombian health insurance plan that is mandatory for citizens and residents) to receive basic coverage in health recovery and sickness prevention.

It is possible to enroll in a Plan Obligatorio de Salud in any establishment that provides health services in Colombia. To obtain this insurance you must show your passport or your foreigner's identification card.

If you are traveling to the departments of La Guajira, Norte de Santander, Putumayo or to the regions of the Eastern Llanos, the Amazon, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, including the entire Atlantic coast, you have to get your yellow fever vaccination at least fifteen days in advance.
